Recently there is an increasing interest in Direct Manufacturing processes
to manufacture implants. Certain particular properties of implant
manufacturing, such as inherent low volumes, need for quick turn-around
times and need for porous materials, makes this area particularly suited for
direct manufacturing processes.
Arcam's EBM process has been introduced and initially used for a range of
implant applications such custom implants based on CT scans, implant
prototypes and porous implants. A challenging issue for Direct Manufacturing
processes, especially pronounced in the highly regulated implant market, is
the need for qualifying methods for materials and processes.

This paper presents briefly the EBM process and its applications for
implants, along with an in depth dicussion advantages and challenges using
direct manufacturing for implants.
